About Roaming Birds
Meet the Bird Nerds Behind Roaming Birds
Welcome to Roaming Birds — a friendly corner of the internet for anyone who’s ever stopped to point at a tree and ask, “What bird is that?”
We’re Mark and Rosie, two lifelong birdwatchers, enthusiastic amateurs, and, if we’re being completely honest, people who can get a little too excited about a bird we’ve never seen before.
Roaming Birds grew out of our shared love of birds and birdwatching. Over the years, we’ve travelled far and wide in search of new species, but some of our favourite birding moments have happened much closer to home, in local parks, on walks, in our gardens, and sometimes while staring out a window when we were supposed to be doing something else.
Because once you start noticing birds, you spot them everywhere.
A Birdwatching Blog for Curious People
We created Roaming Birds to be the kind of birdwatching website we would have wanted when we were starting out: knowledgeable without being intimidating, practical without taking itself too seriously, and full of the things we’re genuinely curious about.
We’re not professional ornithologists or wildlife experts. We just really love birds! And that turned into a hobby, which turned into a lot (no really, a lot)of time watching, researching, photographing, identifying, reading, asking questions and occasionally getting things completely wrong.
And that’s what we love: you don’t need a qualification to enjoy birdwatching. You don’t need the world’s most expensive binoculars. You don’t need to know every bird species before you’re allowed to call yourself a birder.
You just need to have fun.
What You’ll Find on Roaming Birds
We’ve built this blog around a few things we’re particularly passionate about.
Birdwatching Basics
New to birdwatching? We’ve got you.
We’ll be pulling together all our tips and tricks to becoming better birdwatcher, from choosing binoculars and learning how to use them to understanding bird behaviour, finding birds, keeping track of what you’ve seen and getting better at identifying the birds around you.
We’ll also share the things we’ve learned through experience including the mistakes, the questionable purchases and the times we’ve confidently identified a bird only to discover we were looking at something completely different. It happens!
Species & Identification
There are an awful lot of birds out there.
And while that is wonderful, it can also be a little overwhelming when you’re staring at a small, fast-moving shape in a tree thinking, “Is that a finch? A sparrow? Something else entirely?!”
Our species and identification guides are here to help.
We’ll explore individual bird species, identifying features, colours, markings, behaviour, calls and the clues that can help you work out what you’ve just spotted.
Because identifying a bird isn’t just about memorising pictures. The more you watch, the more you start noticing how a bird moves, where it lives, what it sounds like and how it behaves.
That’s when it gets really fun.
Meanings & Symbols
Ok, this one might seem a little random… but we love all the amazing meanings, symbols, and cultural significance that birds hold across the world. Birds have fascinated humans for thousands of years, so naturally we’ve given them quite a lot of meaning along the way.
Across different cultures, birds have appeared in mythology, folklore, religion, art and stories as symbols of everything from freedom and wisdom to love, luck, transformation and death.
This is the slightly more mysterious side of Roaming Birds. We’ll explore bird symbolism, spiritual meanings, folklore, mythology and the stories people have told about birds throughout history.
We’ve Made Plenty of Birdwatching Mistakes
One of the best things about being a hobbyist birdwatcher is that you never really stop learning. We’ve bought gear we didn’t need. We’ve struggled with identification. We’ve read the manuals. We’ve made the mistakes. And we’d rather you didn’t have to.
That’s why we’re committed to making Roaming Birds practical, approachable and honest.
Our goal isn’t to make you feel like you need to become an expert. It’s to give you the tools and tips you need to get out there and have some fun.
Come Birdwatching With Us
Whether you’re completely new to birdwatching, trying to identify something you’ve just seen, looking for better birdwatching tips, or simply curious about why humans have spent thousands of years attaching meaning to birds, you’re in the right place. We’re here to share what we’ve learned, keep learning ourselves and hopefully encourage a few more people to stop, look up and wonder what just flew past.
Welcome to Roaming Birds.
